 Marvin J. Onstad, age 82 of Park River, ND, passed away Saturday, September 21, 2019 at the First Care Health Center of Park River.
Marvin James Onstad was born July 20, 1937 in Walhalla, ND, the son of the late Louis and Ethel (McMurray) Onstad. He graduated from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River in 1955 and then attended Aaker’s Business College in Grand Forks. Marvin started working as an Accountant for Cenex in Park River in 1959, where he was employed for 43 years, retiring in 2002. In 1960, he enlisted in the Army National Guard and was stationed in Fort Ord, California, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Fort Riley, Kansas. Marvin was united in marriage to Mavis Frovarp on July 22, 1962 in Park River, ND. The couple made their home in Park River. He was a member of the Victory Free Lutheran Church, Park River. He has served as Treasurer and Trustee for many years. He loved his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed doing Sudoku, crossword puzzles, playing computer games and watching sports on TV, especially the Twins and Vikings. He enjoyed grain farming and raising cattle for many years with his brother in the evenings after work and on Saturdays. Marvin is survived by his wife, Mavis Onstad, Park River, ND; sons: Keith (Lanie) Onstad, Denver, CO; Kevin (Tonya) Onstad, Bemidji, MN; daughter, Renae (Michael) Midkiff, Highlands Ranch, CO; grandchildren: Jonathan, Tori, Stella and Piper; step-granddaughter, Pauline Guertin; three step-great grandchildren: Jordan, Aleecia and Romeo; brother, Raymond (Darlene) Onstad, Park River, ND; sisters-in-law: Bernice Onstad, Bothell, WA; Delaine (Paul) Peoples, Park River, ND. Many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Donald, mother and father in law: Palmer and Tilda (Lien) Frovarp, sisters-in-law: Deloris Frovarp and Janice Martens and brother-in-law, Jake Martens. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 2:30 P.M. at the Victory Free Lutheran Church, Park River, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Park River, ND. Military Rites will be provided by the Park River Legion Post and the North Dakota National Guard Honor Guard.

 Dorothea “Dorothy” Helen Novak, age 87 of Lankin, ND, passed away on Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at the Good Samaritan Center of Larimore.
Dorothy Bosh was born on Saturday February 6th, 1932 to William and Josephine (Bina) Bosh at the family home in rural Lankin, ND. Entering into a farm family of 10 siblings, there was always excitement and adventures. She lived through the depression and the loss of both parents at an early age. The family was not separated and managed to remain on the farm. Dorothy met many challenges and hardships in her life with great courage. But she also experienced many joyous times. Dorothy was employed as a bookkeeper for the Baker Equity Co-op elevator. She was great at hosting card parties for friends. She enjoyed going to the casino, listening to old time music, Dolly Parton, The Bellamy Brothers, and Don Ho's "Tiny Bubbles ". Dorothy married Bruno F. Novak on November 6, 1950. They lived in Bathgate, Solen, Carson, Carrington, ND and Baker, MT. Dorothy returned to Lankin, ND after the passing of her husband Bruno in February 1982. She married Mark Novak in June, 1986. She was a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she served as a sacristan and on the altar society. After suffering a debilitating stroke on December 10, 2012 she resided at the Good Samaritan Home in Larimore, ND. She is survived her children, Michael of Billings, MT, Cynthia (Tom) Gunderson, Yuma, CO, Pamella (Albin) Jallo, Fordville, ND and Kevin, Lakewood, CO. Grandchildren, Andrea (Tom) Mowat, Aaron Novak, Brett (Sara) Novak, Jenna (Jeremiah) Bentz, Christopher (Paula) Gunderson, Elizabeth (Malvin) Jones, Melissa (John) Bondy, Amber (Tanner) Brueckner and Amy (Taylor) Grabanski. Greatgrandchildren Douglas and Emily Mowat, Desmond and Quintas Novak, Archer and Lennox Debra Jean Novak, Rueban Whitney, Zander Bentz, Sydney, Izaak, Lane and Thomas Gunderson. McKenzie and Addasyn Struckmeyer. Colton and Jayden Bondy, Jack and Hannah Brueckner, Emma, Everly, Elinor and Maverick Grabanski. Sisters Marion Capouch, Minnie (Dennis) Cole and Gen (Ralph) Miller, sisters-in-law Laverne Bosh and Judy Bosh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, spouses Bruno, and Mark J., daughter-in-law Deborah Jean Novak, grandson Jonathon Iver Novak. Great grandson Rowan Novak, siblings William (Georgia), Bartholomew, Florence (Raymond) Jelinek, Leo, Marcella (Herman) Capouch, Josephine (William) Brodina and Herman. Brother-in-law Albert Capouch. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, September 23, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Lankin. Visitation will be Sunday from 5-7 with a Rosary Service at 7:00 P.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Park River. Friends may also call at the church for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery of Pisek.  Caroline A. Knutson, 81, of Walhalla, ND, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2019, at the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier, ND. Funeral Service will be held Monday, September 23, 2019, at 10:30 a.m. at the Walhalla Lutheran Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Sunday September 22, 2019 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be held in the Vang Cemetery.
Caroline A. Heck was born February 6, 1938, to Charles and Florence (Herriot) Heck in rural Osnabrock, ND. She grew up and attended school in the Osnabrock area. After graduating from Osnabrock High School, Caroline attended Aakers Business College in Grand Forks. On June 14, 1959, Caroline married John Knutson at the Zion EUB Church near Osnabrock. After their marriage they lived in Minneapolis and Stacy, MN. In 1971, they moved to Osnabrock, ND, later living in Hensel, ND and Cavalier, ND. In 1982, they moved to Walhalla, ND. Some of the things she enjoyed were crocheting, word search puzzles, spending time with her family and her fur babies. She is survived by her husband, John; children: Wendy (Greg) Truax, Pembina, ND; Kevin (Heather) Knutson, Walhalla, ND; Wayne Knutson, Fargo, ND; and Kristy (Mark) Ham, Naperville, IL; grandchildren: Travis Nordstrom, J.J. Kihne and Thomas Kihne; Jayden Paul and Pressley Paul; Kody Knutson; and Lydia Ham; great-granddaughters: Mataya, Sophia, and Cena; siblings: Duane Heck, Margie Thompson, Jim (Charlene) Heck, Carlton (Linda) Heck, Janice (Larry) Peterson, Richard (Barbara) Heck, Larry (Elfie) Heck, Marvin (Beth) Heck, Leonard (Monica) Heck, and Connie Close. Craig Glen Nelson, age 49 of Grafton, ND, formerly of Reeder, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by his mother, sister Audrey via phone and loving caregivers at the Life Skills & Transition Center in Grafton on Sunday, September 8, 2019.
Craig G. Nelson was born February 11, 1970 in Dickinson, ND to Ardell Rae Stafne-Nelson and the late Chester R. Nelson. He was baptized at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Reeder. He attended school at the School of Promise, the Bowman Public School and Dickinson Public School. Craig lived in Jamestown and Grafton as an adult. He worked at a packaging factory in Jamestown, Black Hills Special Services Co-op, and various jobs in Grafton. Craig participated in Special Olympics where he won various gold and silver medals and ribbons. Craig was active in the Lutheran Church anywhere he lived. He had a personal relationship with the Lord and was a true prayer warrior. He loved music, swimming, riding bike, family vacations, and trains especially rides on Amtrak to Williston. He also liked to ride horse and being the trickster he was, rode his pony into a kitchen on a ranch north of Bowman. Craig was chosen to change lives with those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. His impact in life and in death will reverberate around the world. He became a brain donor upon his death for the autism consortium which includes, Autism Speaks, Harvard University and UC Davis for Autism Research. In January 2019, his life story was shared with the 66th Legislative Assembly. His mother testified on his behalf, of the debilitating medical condition that Autism Spectrum Disorder can be, and the need for alternative solutions to pharmaceuticals. It laid the foundation for the passing of the North Dakota Medical Cannabis HB 1519 bill. Craig is survived by his mother, Ardell R. Stafne-Nelson, Hettinger, ND, siblings: Ryan C. Nelson, Reeder, ND; Audrey (Dana) Nelson-Cihak, Valley City, ND; Loralyn (Brendan) Joyce, Bismarck, ND and Kirsten (Rich) Matthews, Marquette, MI; nieces and nephews: McKinsey Jahner, Aurora Nelson, Morgan Matthews, Erin Joyce, Thomas Matthews, and Sean Joyce; aunt: Ardyth Jeszenka; uncle: Kevan (Gertrude) Stafne, and numerous cousins, extended family of the Life Skills & Transition Center and his best friend Glenn Hawn, Bowman. He is preceded in death by his father, his grandparents: Arne and Norma Stafne, Ingval and Gina Nelson and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and loving caregivers. Doris Jean Rudnik, age 65 of Park River, ND passed away Saturday, September 14, 2019 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center. Doris Jean Rudnik was born May 30, 1954 in Grafton, ND, the daughter of the late Roman J. and Dorothy A. (Czapiewski) Rudnik. She lived with her parents and attended school in Minto through fourth grade. In 1989, Doris attended vocational services at Friendship and in 2005, she moved to residential services in Grafton. In 2016, she moved to a group home in Park River. In 2018 she moved to the Park River Good Samaritan Center. She owned and operated Doris’ Gourmet Beans until her health forced her to retire. She was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. She loved visiting with family and friends, puzzles, playing cards and country music. She enjoyed her family and “buddies” at the Good Samaritan Center. Doris is survived by her sister, Betty Novak, St. Thomas, ND; one nephew and one niece and one great niece and one great nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Cecil Novak. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Grafton, ND. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Minto, ND.  Eileen G. Millar, 90, of Walhalla, ND, passed away peacefully Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the Pembilier Nursing Center, Walhalla, ND. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 18, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Park Center-Walhalla Presbyterian Church, Walhalla, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 17th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the church in Walhalla. Burial will be held in the Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the Pembilier Nursing Center.
Eileen Genevieve was born April 28, 1929 at Morden, Manitoba to Sam and Mathilda (Massey) Rosen. After high school she attended nursing training in Portage La Prairie and moved to British Columbia. She returned to Manitoba to care for her sister who contacted polio. On November 7, 1956, she married Walter P. Millar. They lived on a farm west of Neche, ND. In December of 1960, she became a US Citizen. She loved working in her garden, she canned, froze, and gave away its bounty. She was a wonderful cook and known for her hospitality and generosity. Eileen was a very active member of the Park Center and Walhalla Presbyterian Churches. She did good deeds big and small whether it was remembering a birthday or bringing bread or a hot dish for families dealing with an illness, new baby, or death. She was a loving and patient mother and will be very missed. Eileen is survived by her husband, Walter; children: Glen Millar, Walhalla, Allen Millar, Rogers, AR, Wayne (Dianne) Millar, Wahpeton, ND, and Carol Millar, St. Paul, MN; sisters: Jean Griffin, Diane Yaroshko, Barb Smith and their families. Preceding her in death were her sister, Virginia; brother and sister-in-law, Burton and Shirley Millar.  Oscar Heffta Jr, age 90 of rural Park River and Adams, ND passed away on Wednesday, September 11th, 2019 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.
Oscar Heffta Jr was born September 10, 1929 in rural Adams, ND the son of the late Oscar Sr. and Selma (Knutson) Heffta. He attended school at the Latona Township country school, Adams school and graduated high school from the Walsh County Agricultural School in Park River. Oscar wed Laverne Kaye Midtlyng on February 25, 1955 in Nekoma, ND. The couple made their home in Latona Township of Walsh County where they farmed until 1996 when they moved to their home near Park River. Oscar was a member of the former Sarepta Lutheran Church and was currently a member of the Adams Mountain Lutheran Church. He was also passionate about serving his community and had been involved in the Adams School Board, the community development board that built the Adams Bowling Alley, the Farmer’s Union Cooperative board, the Walsh County Social Service board, decades of service to Latona township and many other organizations. Oscar is survived by his children: Debbie (Gary) Behm, Niagra, ND; Donna (Lynn) Schmiess, Munich, ND; Guy (Karen) Heffta, Adams, ND; Scott Heffta (special friend, Jane Janssen), Adams, ND; Todd Heffta, (fiancé, Mary Skorheim), Grand Forks, ND; Dean (Sarah) Heffta, Washington, IL; 10 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and sibling Yvonne Bjorg, Park River, ND. Lawrence was born April 16, 1933 at Mountain, ND to Clarence Andrew and Theadora Sigrun (Arason) Anderson. LA Farms was homesteaded in 1881 at Hensel, ND. He farmed his entire life and truly loved farming and loved his family. He served on the boards of the Hensel Farmers Elevator and the MinnDak Growers Association. On June 14, 1953, Lawrence married Carrie Louise Ratchenski at Bathgate, ND. He is survived by his wife, Carrie; children: Darrell Lynn Anderson (Sheryl Medlock), Allen Jay (Cynthia) Anderson, Diane Lea (Larry) Hoffman; grandchildren: Shaun (Sarah) Anderson; Crisa (Chris) Mortenson, Courtney (Mike) Olsonawski, and Taylor (Justine) Anderson; Liana (Ben) Madsen, Marisa Johnson, and Denae (Jeff) Forstner; great-grandchildren: Zackary and Emily Anderson; Ava, Hogan, and Vayle Mortenson; Parker, Asher, Paisley, and Dash Olsonawski; Jocelyn and Keira Anderson; Bowen and Andrina Madsen; Axel and Hunter Forstner. He is also survived by his brother, Russell (Goodie) Anderson and sister, Margaret Vistad. Margaret Beverly Mayo, 90, of Cavalier, ND, passed away Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at Wedgewood Manor surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, September 16, 2019 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Brigid of Ireland Catholic Church, Cavalier, ND. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 6:40 p.m. rosary service and a 7:00 p.m. prayer service all at the church. Bev was born January 7, 1929 to Joseph J. and Julia F. (Kelly) Niehenke in Sidney MT. After graduating from Sidney High School, she attended St. Louis University in St. Louis, MO. She completed her freshman year there, and transferred to continue her education at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where she studied nursing. She married Gail F. Vitt, on June 6, 1950, in Sidney, where they made their home on the family ranch. Gail passed away July 2, 1957 of cancer. The following spring, Bev and their four children moved to Phoenix, AZ. They returned to Sidney in 1960 and where she was employed by Tractor and Equipment Co. August 24, 1961 she married John (Jack) Mayo at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks, ND. They made their home in Cavalier, ND, where Jack had an established highway construction company. They enjoyed the challenges of running a family construction business and were blessed with two more children. After Jack’s retirement, in 1977, they began wintering in AZ. On April 10, 1992, Jack died of cancer at his home in Cavalier. Bev’s life centered on her family, the construction business, and her faith. She served on the board of directors for the Pembina County Memorial Hospital, Cavalier Library Board, and was a member of the American Legion Auxilary. She is survived by sons: William (Judy) Mayo, Wahpeton ND, Greg (Barb) Mayo, Cavalier ND, Joe (Jodi) Mayo, Fargo and daughter, Colleen (Eric) Erickson, Mahtomedi, MN; sixteen grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, her two husbands, daughter, Debra Hunt, son, Tim Mayo, sister, Jerry Harnish and several nephews.  Linda J. Nelson, age 66 of Grafton, ND, passed away on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at the Park River Good Samaritan Center.
Linda Nelson was born September 27, 1952 in Grafton, ND, the daughter of the late George and Ruth (Landowski) Nelson. She grew up and attended school near Grafton, graduating from Grafton High School. She worked as a cook at the Grafton State School for over 25 years. She moved into the Park River Good Samaritan Center in 2013. Linda was a member of the St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Grafton. She enjoyed cooking, country music, gardening, making lefse and traveling. She is survived by her siblings: Charlotte Johnson, Adams, ND, George (Charla) Nelson, Grafton, ND and Lori (Kevin) Suda, Mandan, ND as well as several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Paul, sister Carol Sagan and niece Larissa Nelson. Memorial services will be Tuesday, September 17. 2019 at 10:30 A.M. at the Tollefson Funeral Home of Grafton. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Inurnment will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery of Grafton. |
