Walsh County commissioners have expanded a burn ban.
Effective immediately, all open burning in Walsh County is banned.
The Walsh County Commission will reconsider the burn ban at their
October 16th meeting. No garbage burning but a covered grill fire is allowable.
Burning of CRP acres or open ditches is banned. The expansion came after
Emergency Manager Brent Nelson and Sheriff Lauren Wild addressed commissioners.
Wild told commissioners they need to impose a stricter burn ban than one that follows
the state fire danger index. Wild says the county doesn't have the equipment or manpower
to fight a large wildfire. Wild says it's very dry and the county shouldn't take a chance.
Imposing tougher restrictions would be proactive.
Nelson said there's too much confusion about the ban that was in
place earlier. He said fire chiefs in the county want a total burn ban.
Commissioners will review the stricter burn ban October 16th.
