Director of the State Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Leann Bertsch told a Senate committee Thursday that she'd like the minimum-security prison to stay where it is.
HB1312 proposes allocating $200,000 to study a potential move. The deadline for the study would be July 2014. The Bismarck Tribune reports that the bill would also set aside $25 million from the general fund to be put into the correction department's land fund.
The correctional center sits on 900 acres along the Missouri River. Backers of the bill say that relocating the center could save money by eliminating future flooding-related evacuations.
