Army Gen. Martin Dempsey's visit comes just days after an officer of the 91st Missile Wing's operations support squadron was ousted due to a "a loss of confidence."
The base is the command center for 150 Minuteman III missiles and is one of two B-52 bomber bases in the country. The base has suffered a rash nuclear-related missteps since 2007 that has cost several officers their careers.
Most recently, the base earned the equivalent of a "D'' grade in a March test of its mastery of missile launch operations. That led the Air Force to strip several officers of their authority to control and launch nuclear missiles.
