The Pembina Valley’s first RCMP sanctioned handgun range opened last Saturday. The range is located near the point the R.M.s of Roland, Thompson and Stanley meet. Tomm Penner of Dominion Outdoors, a store in the Winkler Mall specializing in guns, ammunition and accessories, said local handgun enthusiasts are happy to have the new facility. It's called Dominion Outdoors Shooting Range and before now handgun enthusiasts had to find ranges near Steinbach or Winnipeg in order to practice. “This has been a dream of mine for probably eight years,” he said. Located nine minutes from Morden and Winkler, the range is located on a former range site. A 25 yard pistol range, it also allows for shooting at 50 yards for long guns chambered to handgun caliber. Penner said he hopes this is only the beginning. “Our goal is to extend the range to include high power rifle, which requires overhead bullet traps to be installed,” he said. And it’s not a small group of people who own and shoot handguns. Penner said the general public would probably be surprised by how many people are involved. He hopes the new range will allow people to realize that they too can pick up the hobby.
